Child Monitoring

If you’re like me, you believe that your children are the most precious gift ever given to you. So it stands to reason that we are concerned with the “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, and “how” of their lives. Some would say that by intruding in their lives we are “invading their privacy”. I don’t agree.  As parents, it is incumbent upon us to prepare and direct our children the best we can. We don’t want them to make the same mistakes we made, but the reality is is that they will make mistakes and maybe some BIG ones. Our children live in a very different time than we did growing up. They are bombarded by information from the internet, TV, radio, and, of course peers. Information is more readily available and moves faster than it ever has and it’s at your child’s fingertips. Children are famous for “acting before thinking” and in the fast-paced society which we live,  this is going to happen more often and with catastrophic consequences. In addition, we [parents] are very busy and fall short of our own desires to always be there for our children. I want you to ask yourself a few questions:

– Are you able to spend as much time with your children as you would like?

– Do you really know what’s going on in their life – personally?

– Do they open up? Or are they aloof when you start asking questions?

If you believe your child is hiding something from you, you might just be right. And if that “something” is drugs or alcohol, wouldn’t you like to know so that you can handle the situation before it gets out of your hands and, perhaps, into the hands of law enforcement? Maybe your child is hanging out with a “new crowd” or with some folks that you’re unsure of. You’re noticing behavioral changes that concern you. Perhaps your child is spending more time at  friend’s houses rather than spending time at home.

When it comes to our children, it’s never too late. But, if you don’t act quickly and responsibly, your child may put you and your family in situation that could hold you both personally and financially liable. And more important than that, is that your child could be in danger. Get to the truth before you find yourself asking “why” did this happen to me.
